Market Overview

While legalization in North Carolina for 2022 looks very promising, currently the state does not have a legal cannabis market. Possession charges for ½ oz or less are considered a misdemeanor with a $200 maximum fine, possession of ½ oz up to and 1.5 oz is considered a misdemeanor with up to 45 days of incarceration and a $1,000 maximum fine. Charges of more than 1.5 oz are considered a felony with up to 8 months of incarceration and a $1,000 maximum fine. As previously mentioned, activists are hopeful for cannabis reform in 2022, a recent poll showed that 82 percent of voters in the state are in favor of legalizing medical cannabis.

Current North Carolina Cannabis Legalization efforts

NC compassion act passed through a 35-10 vote passed June 2nd and received final passage with a 37-6 vote on June 6th sending it to the House of Representatives for further consideration. Although the bill passed through four separate committees in the senate, it is widely perceived that it will not go as smoothly in the House, as recently activists are unsure of leadership approval from the chamber. Republican House Speaker Tim Moore has expressed concerns of this bill and the likelihood of abuse due to patient access to cannabis. The legislative session is set to end on June 30th.

We have contacted a few licensing company before I decided to contact with Canna licensing Experts. So far I think I have made the right choice and I am happy with the work they have done for us. The team answer questions promptly and never leave us alone. Not to mention their charge are reasonable comparing the similar type of consulting company and quality of their job.

Brian and Kalpna at Cannabis License Experts were very pleasant, informative, and knowledgeable regarding licensing. They helped us fill out all the forms needed and guided us through the entire process. I am sure that without their guidance our application would still be in process, or have been dismissed because of some missing information.

Past North Carolina Cannabis Legalization efforts

Multiple efforts have been made in North Carolina to reduce the penalties for cannabis related convictions dating back to 2010, while none of these efforts have come to fruition, activists are hopeful that 2022 is the year that reform will pass. The first medical cannabis bill was introduced in 2014 and was not successful. In 2015, activists had a small win with Governor McCrory signing HB 766 into law which allowed patients with specific ailments to obtain CBD with less than 0.9% THC.
