Ontario’s Ministry of Agriculture has announced that licensed cannabis growers in the province will now be able to apply for a variety of federal and provincial grants which will help growers significantly cut down on production costs. The grants are funded by the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a $3 billion CAD ($2.2 billion USD) initiative that supports agricultural businesses in Canada. This funding may be particularly important to smaller businesses and micro-cultivators once they are fully licensed.
What’s even better is that the application process is quite easy and can be done online! The link to each grant outlines the eligible activities and expenditures covered by the grant, the available cost-share and the documentation required for submission. To be eligible for one of these grants, businesses will simply need the following:
- A legal farm business that manufactures agricultural products
- An ‘Ontario Farm Business Registration Number (FBRN)’ or eligible exemption (if any) for the farm business
- A valid Premises Identification (PID) Number
- Some focus areas need participation in an Environmental Farm Plan, Growing Farm Profits or Biosecurity workshop
A full list of grants for licensed producers and processors is available online. Growers can also apply for federal grants here. It’s important to note that companies planning to produce cannabis-infused edibles and beverages are not yet eligible for these grants and will need to wait until such products are legalized.
