Maryland Medical Cannabis License Solutions

On September 1, 2023, the Maryland Cannabis Administration and the Office of Social Equity announced essential steps for those looking to apply for a cannabis license in the state. The Office of Social Equity has released eligibility criteria for cannabis social equity, and the MCA is launching a Social Equity Verification Portal. How do I qualify as a social equity applicant? To qualify as a social equity applicant, one must meet specific criteria, including having at least 65% ownership and control held by individuals who meet the statutory definition of a social equity applicant. This definition includes living in or attending a public school in a disproportionately impacted area in Maryland, as identified by the Office of Social Equity. Only verified social equity applicants can apply for a standard or micro grower, processor, or dispensary licenses in the initial licensing round. Additional information can be found on the Office of Social Equity's website.

Market Overview

In 2014, the state legislature passed Senate Bill 923 authorized access to Maryland medical cannabis. During the first phase of Maryland Medical Cannabis License applications in 2015, the Natalie M. LaPrade Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission accepted 1081 applications. Nearly three (3) years after the passage of Senate Bill 923, sales of medical marijuana through the state’s program did not begin until 2017. Maryland cannabis has totaled about $400M in cannabis sales through the end of 2021 and has the second highest share of flower sales in the state. Adult recreational legalization appears to be a top issue for Maryland cannabis lawmakers in 2022. Due to Maryland’s location, being in-between multiple highly populated metropolitan areas, Maryland’s cannabis program is attractive for prospective business owners for its central location within the North East.

Brian and Kalpna at Cannabis License Experts were very pleasant, informative, and knowledgeable regarding licensing. They helped us fill out all the forms needed and guided us through the entire process. I am sure that without their guidance our application would still be in process, or have been dismissed because of some missing information.
